Io.net, a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN), recently addressed a significant cybersecurity breach involving GPU metadata. This attack was executed through SQL injection, exploiting exposed user ID tokens. Husky.io, the chief security officer at Io.net, responded rapidly with essential security updates and upgrades, ensuring that the GPUs’ hardware remained uncompromised due to their robust permission layers.

The breach was detected due to an unusual surge in write operations to the GPU metadata API, which promptly triggered security alerts. To counteract the threats, Io.net implemented stricter SQL injection checks on all APIs and boosted the logging of unauthorized access attempts. Moreover, a user-specific authentication solution integrating Auth0 with OKTA was deployed to strengthen security against vulnerabilities linked to universal authorization tokens.

This incident also affected Io.net's rewards program, leading to a temporary reduction in active GPU connections. To overcome this setback, Io.net launched Ignition Rewards Season 2, aiming to revitalize supply-side participation by incentivizing suppliers to upgrade and reconnect their devices.

The breach highlighted the need for continuous security enhancements, particularly in response to aggressive attack methods that have evolved due to previous security patches. Io.net remains committed to conducting thorough reviews and penetration tests to ensure the network's integrity and reliability in delivering compute hours.
