On May 31, Rashawn Russell, a former Deutsche Bank executive, was sentenced to 41 months in prison by the Eastern New York District Court for wire fraud involving a cryptocurrency scheme and an access device fraud scheme. Russell pleaded guilty in September, admitting to running the fraudulent R3 Crypto Fund from November 2020 to August 2022. The fund promised high returns on cryptocurrency investments but was used for Russell's personal gain or to repay other investors.

Additionally, Russell was involved in obtaining 97 bank cards using 43 identities for fraudulent transactions between September 2021 and June 2023. Initially facing up to 30 years in prison, Russell was also ordered to pay $1.5 million in restitution to the victims.

Russell's conviction is part of a broader crackdown on crypto-related fraud. Recently, several individuals have faced charges and sentences for similar schemes, highlighting increased enforcement against crypto crimes.
