Taiwan Investigates Crypto Betting on Presidential Election

Author : Renuka K

As Taiwan's presidential election approaches on January 13, 2024, there has been a notable rise in the use of cryptocurrency betting platforms like Polymarket by Taiwanese citizens. This trend has prompted a legal inquiry, with several individuals being investigated for potentially violating local election laws.

The Taiwanese authorities have warned residents against participating in election-related gambling activities, which are illegal under Article 88-1 of the Election and Recall Act. Violations could lead to six months of imprisonment, detention, or fines up to NT$100,000 (approximately $3,188 USD).

Polymarket, the platform in question, has previously faced regulatory challenges in the United States. In January 2022, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) initiated legal proceedings against Polymarket for operating an "illegal unregistered or non-designated facility" since June 2020. This move by the CFTC came despite Polymarket's significant trading volume during the 2020 U.S. election, exceeding $10 million.

These events underscore the complex and often contentious intersection of cryptocurrency, betting, and legal regulations in the context of political events.
