OneCoin Lawyer Receive 10Year Sentence in High-Profile Crypto Case

Author : Renuka K

In a landmark ruling, Mark Scott, a lawyer involved in the infamous OneCoin cryptocurrency scheme, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. This sentence, handed down by Judge Edgardo Ramos of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, follows Scott's 2019 conviction on charges of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

The case, which has garnered significant attention, centers on Scott's role in laundering millions of dollars through OneCoin, a crypto firm co-founded by Ruja Ignatova, also known as the 'Cryptoqueen,' and Karl Sebastian Greenwood in 2014. Despite Scott's legal team recommending a five-year sentence and prosecutors pushing for a minimum of 17 years, the judge ultimately decided on a 10-year term.

Before sentencing, Scott expressed sympathy for the victims of OneCoin, a sentiment acknowledged by Judge Ramos. OneCoin, notorious for being one of the most prominent Ponzi schemes in the crypto world, has affected numerous investors globally.

Greenwood, another key figure in the OneCoin saga, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on fraud and money laundering charges in September 2023, along with a $300 million restitution order for the scheme's victims. Meanwhile, Irinia Dilkinska, the former chief compliance officer at OneCoin, pleaded guilty to two felony counts in November 2023, with her sentencing scheduled for February.

Despite Ignatova's continued absence, as she remains at large, the sentencing of Mark Scott marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to bring justice to the victims of OneCoin. This case also underscores the heightened scrutiny and regulatory actions against fraudulent activities in the cryptocurrency sector.
