Vitalik Buterin Unveils Ethereum’s 2024 Roadmap Vision

Author : Velagala Kumar Reddy

Ethereum’s 2024 roadmap, recently shared by co-founder Vitalik Buterin, reveals a focused approach to enhancing the blockchain’s capabilities. This roadmap highlights six critical areas:

1. The Merge: Ethereum’s transition to a more energy-efficient Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, a shift already realized in September 2022, marked a significant reduction in the network’s energy consumption. This step is crucial for maintaining a simple and robust PoS consensus system.

2. The Surge: Aiming for an ambitious target of 100,000 transactions per second, this part of the roadmap focuses on scaling Ethereum and its Layer 2 networks to support significantly higher transaction volumes.

3. The Scourge: This element deals with mitigating risks associated with Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) and liquid pooling, addressing some of the critical vulnerabilities in the network.

4. The Verge: Focused on easing block verification, this part aims to streamline the verification process for greater efficiency.

5. The Purge: Simplifying the Ethereum protocol is at the heart of ‘The Purge’, which is integral to making the network more user-friendly and less complex.

6. The Splurge: This final part encompasses all other aspects of the Ethereum network’s development not covered in the previous five components.

Buterin specifically emphasized the role of single-slot finality (SSF) in post-Merge PoS improvements, identifying it as a straightforward solution to many of Ethereum’s current PoS design weaknesses.
