Alameda Research Drops Suit Against Grayscale as GBTC See Outflows

In a significant turn of events, Alameda Research, the hedge fund affiliated with the now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX, has voluntarily dismissed its lawsuit against Grayscale Investments. This legal action, filed in March 2023, sought injunctive relief against practices allegedly suppressing the value of FTX debtors' assets.

Alameda Research's suit initially targeted Grayscale's management fees and a “self-imposed redemption ban” on shareholders in the Grayscale Bitcoin (GBTC) and Ethereum Trusts. The suit claimed that if Grayscale reduced its fees and allowed redemptions, the FTX Debtors' shares would be worth substantially more.

Grayscale CEO Michael Sonnenshein defended the 1.5% management fee charged for the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, citing the company's size, liquidity, and track record. The recent conversion of GBTC into a spot exchange-traded fund (ETF) by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has left this fee relatively high compared to competitors.

Following the conversion of GBTC to a spot ETF, the trust has experienced significant outflows, leading to a decrease in assets under management from almost $30 billion to $23.7 billion. This trend contrasts with the general upward movement of most other spot Bitcoin ETFs.

The lawsuit's dismissal and the subsequent outflows from GBTC reflect the ongoing shifts in the cryptocurrency investment landscape. These developments highlight the complexities of managing digital asset trusts and the evolving relationship between traditional financial structures and the dynamic world of cryptocurrency.
