OpenAI, the firm behind the revolutionary AI technology ChatGPT, has recently revealed its role in identifying and disrupting several global influence operations that leveraged its technology for deceptive purposes. On May 30, OpenAI announced that it had terminated accounts linked to five covert influence operations over the past three months.

These operations exploited OpenAI’s models to generate misleading content aimed at manipulating public opinion across various platforms, including social media and blogging sites. The campaigns involved creating fake comments for articles, social media profiles, and multilingual content to influence political outcomes and public perception.

One notable operation, dubbed “Spamouflage,” utilized AI to research social media, generate multilingual content, and manage websites. Another, called “Bad Grammar,” targeted regions such as Ukraine, Moldova, the Baltic States, and the United States, using AI to run Telegram bots and create political comments. Additionally, the "Doppelganger" group generated multilingual comments designed to manipulate public opinion on platforms like X and 9GAG.

OpenAI also reported disrupting a group named the “International Union of Virtual Media,” which used AI to generate long-form articles and website content. Furthermore, a commercial entity called STOIC was found to be using AI to produce social media posts and articles aimed at influencing opinions on topics like the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Gaza conflict, Indian elections, and critiques of the Chinese government.

Ben Nimmo, a principal investigator for OpenAI, emphasized that these operations have not seen significant audience engagement due to the firm’s interventions. This disclosure marks a significant step as it is the first time a major AI company has openly addressed the misuse of its tools for online deception.
