Nigeria has officially introduced the continent's first multilingual large language model (LLM), a milestone in African artificial intelligence development, announced by Communications Minister Dr. Bosun Tijani. This strategic move, facilitated by a collaboration among Nigerian AI company Awarritech, DataDotOrg, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Centre for AI and Robotics (NCAIR), aims to foster AI advancements crucial for the nation.

The newly launched LLM is designed to understand and process five low-resource languages plus accented English, enhancing the AI's ability to manage diverse linguistic data. This development is part of a broader initiative to integrate AI into various sectors, improving services and infrastructure within the country. The LLM was unveiled after a comprehensive four-day AI workshop in Abuja, which also saw the drafting of Nigeria's National AI Strategy. The strategy focuses on accelerating AI projects, supported by significant investments including a $3.5 million seed fund.
